Reviews Amazon.com If you've struggled with trying to keep a thick computer book flat on your desk while working through its lessons, the 3D Studio Max 3 Interactive Training CD might be for you. By having the lessons on your screen and your hands on the keyboard, it's much easier to read through, practice, and toggle between the lessons and modeling software. Each of the tutorials are planned well, and it's great to be able to click immediately to an area of interest. There's also a searchable index, and each entry is a link to the page with that item. The lessons on the CD-ROM are built in HTML. Any computer with a Web browser can view them, and if the computer has an Internet connection, there are external links and updates that can be accessed from within the lessons. The problem with this kind of delivery--graphic-rich HTML documents on a CD-ROM--is one of speed. The Web browser downloads embedded graphics from the CD-ROM to the local hard drive and into the browser's cache folder. This can be slow, depending on the speed of the CD-ROM drive and the size of the graphics on the page. Also, the authors don't take advantage of embedding QuickTime movies in the Web pages. Since this is a lesson plan on using an animation program, it would seem natural to show the final animation for a given lesson right on the page. Despite the drawbacks, 3D Studio Max 3 Interactive Training CD is a good value for someone needing to get up the Max 3 learning curve. Although it's not as enjoyable as flipping through the color plates in a book, it does keep your hands on the keyboard and your mind on the program. --Mike Caputo
