Bob LeVitus, contributing editor of MacUser magazine and the author of Mac OS 8 for Dummies, upgrades his own book to offer essential details of the 8.5 system software. Mac OS 8.5 for Dummies is written for both the beginner and the seasoned Mac "dummy" with hints on everything from organizing files and folders to automating daily functions with AppleScript. While committed Mac owners might argue (with some truth) that their beloved computer is so user friendly that it doesn't need a guidebook, LeVitus shows that even OS 8.5 has a few tricks up its sleeve. Granted, the book has its basic moments--it opens with such questions as "What is system software?" and "What you should see after turning the power on." But eventually LeVitus moves on to more subtle fare, like managing virtual memory, disk cache, and RAM disk or using keyboard shortcuts. He even includes sections on "How to Write an AppleScript in 21 Minutes" and "What Can Stay and What Can Go" in 8.5 OS software (a great way to reclaim RAM and hard-disk space). As with all For Dummies books, key items are flagged in the margins with tip, hands on, warning, or technical stuff icons. The book is also populated with the tongue-in-cheek tone that distinguishes the whole series: "Windows is just like the Mac. Yeah, right. And Yugo is the Eastern-European cousin of BMW." --Patrick O'Kelley

Book Description
The 1998 upgrade to the friendly Macintosh operating system is more than just a pretty face-lift. Mac OS 8.5 includes dozens of new or improved features that make using your Mac easier, which means that you can get your work done faster and have more time to play. The new OS 8.5 can make you more productive, give you fewer headaches and hassles, and make you fall in love with your Mac (or your iMac) all over again. How can you resist? Mac OS 8.5 For Dummies by Mac guru and best-seller author Bob LeVitus starts with the basics and covers everything you ever wanted (or needed) to know about Mac OS 8.5. Get acquainted with icons, windows, menus, disks, and trash, and then move on to file and memory management, printing, and file sharing. Crawl through the Control Panels folder, automate your Mac with AppleScript, troubleshoot your system when it misbehaves, and find out which files can be removed safely from your Mac to save disk space and precious system resources. Finally, take a spin around the World Wide Web with the latest Internet browsers, or grab a copy of fellow author and Mac-lover Charles Seiter's The Internet For Macs® For Dummies®, 3rd Edition, and boldly go where no Web browser has gone before.
