A big book with pretty much all the answers, Windows 98 Unleashed: Professional Reference Edition ranks with the best of the comprehensive Windows 98 books. You'll find that this book's combination of step-by-step guides and deep explanations makes it both practical and enjoyable.

Covering every user-level Windows 98 topic, the book guides you through installation, use, modification, and maintenance of the operating system. If you know the basics of getting around in Windows (clicking, manipulating windows, and so on), this hardback book represents a fine choice for your computing library.

After explaining how to install Windows 98, McFedries gives a tour of what's new in this version. He then goes on to document the operating system piece by piece: interface customization, Device Manager, hardware, the Registry, printing, networking, and dozens of other subjects get in-depth chapters. McFedries' coverage of the Registry stands out: he explains Registry hacking well and with depth. He also describes TweakUI, a powerful but little-known interface customization tool.

Since Windows 98 takes networking (both local and global) more seriously than its predecessors, this book explores connectivity in depth. You'll get the goods on connecting to other computers in a variety of ways, ranging from direct cable to connections to local area networks and dial-up Internet access. Network tools such as Outlook Express and Internet Explorer receive adequate documentation. Not surprisingly (and not improperly, considering the similarities between Windows 98 and Windows 95), some parts of this book appear to have been taken almost directly from Sams' Windows 95 books. A companion CD-ROM includes a demonstration version of Microsoft's TechNet support software, plus some shareware, freeware, and documentation.

Book Description
The Unleashed Professional Reference edition takes you beyond the average discussions of the technology, giving you practical advice and in-depth coverage. With this extensive guide you'll obtain the skills, understanding, and breadth of knowledge to unleash the full potential of Windows 98. Paul McFedries' Windows 98 Unleashed, Professional Reference Edition includes the Microsoft Tech Net Sampler and four additional electronic reference chapters, a Windows 98 Knowledge Base, a glossary of computer and networking terms, a great collection of shareware and freeware, Microsoft Tech Net Sampler, and the Windows 98 and Windows NT Knowledge Base. With this encyclopedia of solutions, you will learn to automate tasks using the Windows Scripting Host and batch file programming; control Windows 98 startup; master Web integration and the Active Desktop; customize the Taskbar, Start menu, and display; optimize memory and disk access; and get the most out of Device Manager and hardware profiles.

Synopsis
Containing 1,400 pages of intermediate to expert Windows coverage, including "under the hood" information that is typically undocumented, this book will appeal to Windows power users and developers. It covers all the new features of Windows 98, including Active Desktop, improved installation, unified driver model for Windows 98 & NT, multiple display support, and improved Internet tools including Internet Explorer 4.0.
