With a full-color, graphically airy layout and clear notes that supplement step-by-step instructions, How to Use Windows 98 shows how to get around in Windows 98. If you are a novice who finds technical text intimidating, you will appreciate this book's visual approach.

Hergert kind of stumbles at the beginning, showing you how to customize the Active Desktop and then, in a subsequent sequence, how to use the mouse. (You have to use the mouse to customize the Active Desktop, so this sequence makes no sense). From there, though, he recovers, explaining the fundamentals of switching among programs, managing files and folders, and using some of the applets (such as WordPad) that come with Windows 98. Unlike most elementary books, this guide shows how to enable and use Windows 98's Accessibility features, which make the program easier for handicapped people to use.

Though the details of setting up an Internet connection are conspicuously absent, How to Use Windows 98 does discuss employing Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to use Internet resources such as Web pages and electronic mail. Entry-level information on Web surfing includes instructions on how to use Internet Explorer's navigation aids. --David Wall
