Windows 95 retains compatibility with the age-old file allocation table (FAT) file system, but it also integrates many new features, not the least of which is long-filename management. In addition to long file names, Windows 95 includes virtual file allocation table (VFAT), VREDIR for Microsoft-standard networks, NWREDIR for NetWare networks, and Installable File System Manager (IFSMgr) to tie it all together. Inside the Windows 95 File System also explains the complicated means by which Windows 95 stores and accesses disk data.

Typical of O'Reilly books, this guide peers deeply into its subject. The first chapter discusses MultiMon, a system call monitor (encoded on the companion diskette) that enables you to see what's going on in real time. Mitchell goes on to explore file names, the procedure by which programs call IFSMgr in order to work with files, file-system drivers' management of file system calls, and the internal structure of file systems. This book also teaches you to write a file-system driver (FSD).
