This exciting tour of emerging Web technologies explains what Java and XML offer for the future of the Internet. Early chapters discuss the current state of the Internet, including HTTP, followed by a quick tour of Java technologies. The authors look at database standards such as SQL (for relational databases) and the Object Data Management Group (ODMG) 2 standard (for object databases). The most hands-on part of this title examines how to implement a Web-based database using three different technologies: Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) for programming relational databases in Java; the emerging SQLJ standard for creating "embedded" SQL within Java code; and the ODMG Java binding for manipulating object-oriented databases directly in Java. Next, the authors look at providing HTML pages on the fly using Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and Java Servlets. Further sections introduce additional Java-based technologies, such as Remote Method Invocation (RMI), Java Object Request Brokers (ORBs), JavaBeans, and Enterprise JavaBeans. Later in the book, the authors explore the intricacies of the XML standard for structuring content within Web browsers. They also detail the Java classes that permit developers to program with XML today.
