Book Description
"Guide to Successfully Applying the UML" offers a tool-independent and process-independent roadmap for successfully applying the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The UML is a modeling language for specifying, visualizing, constructing, and documenting the artifacts of a system-intensive process. It was originally conceived by Rational Software Corporation and three of the most prominent methodologists in the information systems and technology industry: Grady Booch, James Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobson. The language has gained significant industry support from various organizations via the UML Partners Consortium and has been submitted to and approved by the Object Management Group as a standard. This book works in concordance with references to offer a suite of practical real-world examples to help novice and expert users of the UML to understand the whole language (holistically and cohesively), including rules of usage and principles of composition, style guidelines, and a roadmap for successfully applying the UML. The examples are presented in a "fairly intuitive/evolutionary" manner that demostrate the key concepts of the UML and help readers explore the wide range of uses of the UML. The type of information truly required to apply the UML and capitalize on all it has to offer must provide a cost-conscious alternative to heavyweight methodologies and a maturity-conscious alterative to lightweight methodologies--fundamentally, this is the type of information captured in a roadmap. The book does not present any particular process, but focuses on a roadmap that emphasizes wht ought to be addressed when applying the UML, including the decision points (or critical points within an effort at which decisions must be made) and their relationships. A methodology specifically addresses who does what activities on what artifacts, including when, how, why, and where such activities should be done. Topics and features: *practical real-world examples to which everyone can relate, starting with simple examples and incrementally moving to more complex ones, with explanation of examples and the UML notation*rules of usage and principles of composition, style guidelines, examples, and a roadmap that differentiate this book from other UML-related books*a tool- and process-independent roadmap to successfully apply the UML, emphasizing what ought to be addressed when applying the UML with any specific process, including decision points and their relationships
