Reviews Amazon.com As the title suggests, this is a book for beginners. Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step starts from scratch and introduces you to fundamental programming concepts and tools in the Visual Basic (VB) 5.0 development environment. You'll learn how to use forms and controls and how to set their properties, call their methods, and put them together to build applications. The book goes on to introduce data types, variables, and operators; to show you how to use flow-control structures, such as If-Then and For-Next; and to acquaint you with the core concepts of debugging and error handling. After you've got these basics down, you'll move on to learn about procedures and functions, arrays, some interesting graphics methods, file I/O, and even simple database access. This is a slow-paced tutorial and experienced programmers looking to get up to speed quickly in VB 5.0 will want a different book. It also--wisely--steers clear of such advanced concepts as classes and ActiveX control creation. However, every programmer has to start somewhere and, if Visual Basic looks intriguing, this is a good place to start.
