Reviews Amazon.com As entertaining and compelling as The Fugitive Game, The Watchman details the story of Kevin Poulsen, the notorious hacker and phreaker who became the first computer criminal in America to be charged with espionage. The weird chaotic story begins with Kevin's childhood love of telephones and leads through tales of hacking, break-ins, celebrity stalking, and so much more. The exploits are mind-boggling, the characters wild and beyond eccentric, and the storytelling is frenetic. The cast of characters is familiar. In addition to Poulsen, there is friend and accomplice Ron Austin and all- around shady character Eric Heinz (AKA, Justin Peterson, Agent Steal), who eventually helped the FBI set up Kevin Mitnick during the last days of his parole. The three form a skeptical alliance--breaking into Pacific Bell offices, rigging radio contests, and even running a hi-tech call-girl service. Littman presents Kevin Poulsen both critically and sympathetically. It is clear throughout that Poulsen is a criminal and, unlike much of the hacker community, often profits from his adventures. It is uncertain, however, whether he deserves the punishment that is handed down by the United States government. Once again, Littman raises important social, legal, and ethical questions surrounding the case--many of which must remain unanswered. This is a book for everyone, from the tech-head to the lay person, and details the subject matter in both a captivating and intelligent fashion. A page-turner that is as complicated as its subject, The Watchman portrays Poulsen with refreshing clarity and appropriate criticisms.
