Reviews Amazon.com Are you amazed at the reams of information that new technologies have made available to you? A little overwhelmed by all the data you have to wade through to find what you're looking for? Data Smog author David Shenk knows how you feel. Shenk was infatuated with information technology--until he realized that he was being bombarded with too much information, so much that it was destroying his quality of life. He feels that we're moving toward an information-infested society of people with weakened vision, sore backs, and "culturally induced ADD" (Attention Deficit Disorder). In Data Smog, Shenk declares that the information glut is causing such problems as social fragmentation, the breakdown of democracy, the decline of educational standards, and the empowerment of demagogues. Shenk frames the book with his 13 "Laws of Data Smog" (such as "Silicon circuits evolve much more quickly than human genes" and "Cyberspace is Republican") and proceeds to explain the truth behind each of these bold statements. At the end of the book, Shenk offers five antidotes for the problem, suggesting that people filter their own intake and output of information and even proposing that the government get involved in protecting consumers from information spam. For those who have experienced some kind of information overload, Data Smog--with its conversational style, personal anecdotes, and quotes from industry specialists--is mesmerizing. --This text refers to the hardcover edition of of this title
