Book Description
Server-side Flash is actually two books in one. On the one hand, it is most definitely a Flash book. It looks at how Flash connects up to the backend or server-side of the the World Wide Web and Internet. It turns out that besides being a great animation application, Flash is actually a better cross-browser interface than plain HTML because it is consistently treated the same by both major browsers making it much easier to learn and use. Second, the book is a clear and simple introduction to server side scripting and databases. If you've avoided learning CGI/Perl, ASP, and PHP, or databases like MySQL, MS Access, and XML because the server-side world was spooky to you, then you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that working with Flash actually makes it easier to learn using server-side applications. To make it even easier, the book comes with two one-month free hosting services. On one service, you can learn how to use CGI/Perl and PHP/MySQL in a real world environment and on the other ASP/Access (plus CGI/Perl). But there's more. Often areas like printing, Generator, XML and real world applications, along with a host of little secrets that developers keep to themselves, somehow get left out of books on Flash. Not on this one. Instead of a paragraph and an example or two, entire chapters are devoted to printing, XML, Generator, and two chapters on developing your own games and two more chapters on a working e-commerce site using Flash and server-side applications. To make it even easier, the CD ROM that accompanies the book has on it PHP, MySQL, and Apache Server, all the scripts in the book, and a whole trove of trial software from Macromedia. If all you can do is work the client-side of Flash, you're missing the whole other half of Flash--the server-side. This book fills you in on the other half of Flash.
